Each week stands alone and connects to the others. Children can attend any or all weeks. The full curriculum is designed and delivered by educators rooted in the community.
Week 1 · June 22–26
Led by Akin Alston, 25-year veteran South End math educator. Real algebra, real geometry, real confidence — the kind of mathematical fluency our community already has and deserves to see reflected back.
Lead educator: Baba Akin Alston, with special guests including Aerospace Engineer Brandon Wright.
Week 2 · June 29 – July 3
A week of capoeira — the Afro-Brazilian art that braids dance, martial discipline, and music into one practice. Bodies, rhythm, history, and joy. Led in partnership with Union Cultural Center.
Lead educators: Mestre Silvinho and Leika Suzumura, in partnership with Union Cultural Center.
Week 3 · July 6–10
Reading, writing, podcasting, and the art of making your argument and standing behind it. Each child leaves with five books, theirs to keep, and the skill to defend a position with both fire and care.
Lead educators: Professor Edwin Lindo, JD and Baba Akin Alston, with special guests.
Week 4 · July 13–17
Children spend the week with doctors, nurses, healers, and researchers who look like them — and learn what it means to take care of a body, a mind, and a community.
Lead educator: Dr. Estell Williams, MD, with a special guest.
Week 5 · July 20–24
Chess instruction, strategy, tournament play, and the cultural history of Black and global chess. Every child takes home their own board, a chess book, and a Chess.com membership.
Lead educators: Instructor Jerrell Davis and Professor Edwin Lindo, JD, with special guests.
